How To Get The Most Out Of Your HVAC For Less

Posted on

When you have the air conditioning system on, you know to make sure everyone closes the doors tightly when they come in and out or the comfortable air will escape, causing the HVAC system to work longer and harder to bring the house temperature back up to where you want it. However, there are a lot of other ways the air can escape and ways you can be overworking your HVAC system. These things will end up costing you more money. Here are some ways to get the most out of your HVAC system for less.

Recognize your window weaknesses

There are a lot of ways your windows can be working against you when you are trying to heat your home. Some window frames are better at providing insulation to keep the inside temperature easier to control. For example, vinyl or wood frames will provide much better insulation than aluminum ones do.

Thin, single-paned windows can let a lot of heat in. All you have to do is place your hand in front of your window during the heat of the day and you will feel the heat pouring in, right through the glass. Double-paned windows or windows with film on them will add insulation that will prevent much of that heat from coming in.

Recognize your door weaknesses

Your exterior doors should be made of material known for being good with regards to their insulation offerings. Solid wood doors offer great insulation. Also, vinyl doors will give you good insulation. If you have a door that isn't well-insulated, then replacing it is a good idea.

The weather stripping around the doors must be in good shape if it is going to prevent drafts. This is something you can tend to on your own by buying new weather stripping at the hardware store and putting it where the old was after removing the old stuff and cleaning the surface.

Recognize the importance of the air filter

One of the best things that you can do for your HVAC system is something that's very simple and inexpensive. This is to make sure you are keeping the filter clean. Don't wait until the amount of time comes that the filter should need to be replaced, but stay proactive and check on it every few weeks or so. This way, you won't accidentally be running the system with a dirty filter.

Have any issues checked by a professional

If you find your system doesn't seem to be cooling as it normally does, it is cooling the home unevenly, it is putting out odd odors, it is making strange noises, or it is doing anything else out of the ordinary, then have an air conditioning repair contractor come right out to see what's going on. You don't want to wait and keep running the system or it can lead to bad problems.
