Improving The Air In Your Home With Regular Air Conditioning Service

Posted on

The air in your home can have dust, pollen, and other contaminants in it that can make it tough to breathe if you or a family member has allergies, asthma, or some other respiratory problem. The best way to improve the air quality is through regular maintenance and cleaning of the HVAC system in your home.

Change the Air Filters

One of the most important things you can do to improve the air in your home is to change the air filters in the HVAC system regularly. There are some specialty filters that filter microscopic particles from the air and others that filter specific kinds of particulate as the air passes through the filters. Avoid using scented or treated filters because they can add things to the atmosphere that may be an irritant for people with respiratory issues. It is a good idea to avoid reusable filters as well. They are hard to get completely clean, and if you do not get them dry after cleaning, they can grow mold.

Clean the Air Ducts Out

You can clean the air ducts and vents where you can reach them, but to get all the dust out of the air ducts, hiring a professional cleaning service offers a lot of benefits. They have special equipment to get the entire duct clean, and these services capture the dust they are removing from the system, so the dust is not settling in your home. If you have a lot of long ductwork runs, or a lot of tight curves in the system, the cleaning service has tools to clean those as well. They will get all the dirt and dust that you could not reach any other way.

Change the Intake Filters

The HVAC unit has several filters in the system that are not directly inline to your home, but they do filter the air coming into the system. Changing these filters regularly will prefilter the air before it gets to the filter inside. The prefiltering of the intake air can help extend the life of the filter in the home, but don't overlook the main air filter because you changed the intake filter. They are both essential and will help your system run efficiently and improve the quality of the air coming into your home. If you are not sure where to find the filters, ask your home AC maintenance company to show you where to find them and how to change them between full-service visits.
